Warner Bros.’ film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, will be available to stream through Max on December 15 after its theatrical release on July 21. The movie has earned over $1.4 billion globally, making it the top-grossing film of 2023 and Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film to date.

Additionally, Barbie will debut on Max with a special American Sign Language (ASL) version, featuring ASL performer Leila Hanaumi signing throughout the film. This other version of the movie can be found on Max as a standalone title, indicated by the sign-language symbol in its key art.

Just when I thought I couldn’t get more invested in the adorably bloody roguelike world of Cult of the Lamb, developer Devolver Digital teamed up with comic book publisher Oni Press to launch a new comic series, Cult of the Lamb: The First Verse, written by Alex Paknadel and drawn by Troy Little. 

As someone who has only just begun their descent into a cult (thanks to some very enthusiastic pestering from a friend), this comic series looks like a brilliant way to get to know all the creatures that I’ll eventually encounter in Cult of the Lamb. The series will also follow the star of the show, The Lamb, as they forge ahead on their path of recruiting new followers and expanding their religious cult. 

It’s clear that I’m not the only one excited by this prospect. With 30 days to go until the all-or-nothing deadline of April 12, Cult of the Lamb: The First Verse reached its goal of £7,800 in just six minutes—now the pledges are sitting at $89,500/£70,000 and counting at the time of writing this story.

Exciting news, PC gamers: We now have yet another way to pine for Bloodborne on PC. A new emulator project appeared on Github on Saturday from the creator of excellent PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3, this one named RPCSX. Its target platform? The PlayStation 4—an exciting prospect, since Sony’s PC ports inevitably won’t cover the system’s entire library. For the foreseeable future, though, pining after PS4 exclusives like Bloodborne is all we’ll be able to do, as the emulator is likely years away from making commercial games legitimately playable.

There are several reasons to temper your expectations here, including the fact that RPCSX currently isn’t being built for Windows. “This is an experimental emulator for PS4 written in C++ for Linux. It’s NOT possible to run any games yet. It’s also unknown when it will become possible,” says the Github page.

RPCS3 has been in development for a decade, and still 30% of the games in the PS3’s library “either can’t be finished, have serious glitches or have insufficient performance” in the emulator. Since RPCSX is just getting started, it could be a year or more before games so much as boot, let alone run smoothly…

Sorcerers are Diablo 4’s ultimate chameleons with the number of builds they have capable of crushing the RPG’s upcoming leaderboards. Last time, it was a lightning build that was so fast it made the game a slideshow, and now it’s a build that fills your screen with bouncy fireballs.

Diablo 4 streamer Rob2628 is back with a build that uses the same structure as the Arc Lash build, but ramps up the damage by using Fireball in combination with a Unique pair of gloves.

The Gloves of the Illuminator, which you can find pretty easily, turn your Fireballs into basketballs and cause them to bounce and explode for slightly less damage than usual. With loads of attack speed, you can dump buckets of them out as you jump from room to room with Teleport. Enemies instantly turn into ash with this setup, so you don’t even need to worry about having defensive gear on.

There are a few key parts of the setup that make it work:

• Gloves of the Illuminator make Fireballs bounce
• Flickerstep boots lets you spam Teleport and reset your Ultimate skill cooldown
• Tibault’s Will leggings give you a huge damage increase and refill your mana when you Teleport

Amazon is often on the ball when it comes to beating other retailers in Black Friday and Cyber Monday price battles. As for gaming laptops, we’ve seen a good few where Amazon has smashed the competition over on our Cyber Monday gaming laptop deals page. When it comes to the MSI Vector, however, I thought I’d draw your attention away from the Amazon mainstay to Newegg, where you can nab the RTX 4080 MSI Vector for just $1,599. 

That’s a $500 saving on a gaming laptop with a GPU that often matches, even outperforms, the portable RTX 4090. That’s made possible thanks to the 175W graphics config, and should see this laptop acing any game you throw at it through 2024.

It may not have a current-gen Intel CPU, but that Core i9 12900HX was top of the line a few years back. It’ll still keep you covered when it comes to particle effects, and general processing goodness today. And since it supports DDR5 memory, MSI has been able to round off the config with a tasty 16GB of DDR5-4800 RAM. That’s a terrific bit of bandwidth and more than enough memory to support your gaming habit, even if not as fast as some DDR5 kits nowadays.

If you’re into action RPGs and you still haven’t played Grim Dawn, I think you really should. I talked about it a bunch as a counter-example to the ways Diablo 4 made me feel back in July, and while it’s an old’un, releasing in 2016 after a 2012 kickstarter, it’s a good’un. There’s a reason it’s kept a humble but enthusiastic fanbase this whole time—it’s good, well-designed, old-fashioned ARPG fun.

Grim Dawn comes from the minds of Crate Entertainment—formed from Titan quest developers Iron Lore Entertainment after its closure. It’s a hack’n’slash ARPG that places its focus on occult lovecraftian mythos over angels and demons. 

The game was given two major expansion packs—Ashes of Malmouth in 2017, which added two new acts, two new classes (called “Masteries” in-game) and a bunch of other goodies. Then in 2019, Forgotten Gods was released, taking the player through a desert romp and providing one of my favourite masteries, the Oathkeeper, which lets you hurl your shield around Captain America-style.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon brings back FromSoftware’s mech series after a 10 year wait, and it’s every bit the revival Armored Core deserved. After such a long wait, it’d be a shame to waste time not playing Armored Core 6 when that time could be spent tinkering with mechs and jumping into frenetic missions as soon as the game goes live. AC6 doesn’t have a single global release time across platforms, though, so when exactly you’ll be able to play it depends on whether you’re on PC or console.

Three months after Microsoft announced its closure, Hi-Fi Rush studio Tango Gameworks has found a new home with PUBG publisher Krafton. In an announcement today, the South Korean publisher describes the move as its “first significant investment in the Japanese market”.

According to Krafton’s statement the move won’t impact the availability of Tango Gamesworks’ back catalogue, which also includes The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo. It also says it will collaborate with Xbox and ZeniMax “to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity at Tango Gameworks, allowing the talented team to continue developing the Hi-Fi Rush IP and explore future projects”.

Reading between the lines, I think that means Krafton either has no interest in making further The Evil Within and Ghostwire games, or else it hasn’t purchased those IPs. I’ve reached out to Krafton for clarification and will update if I hear back. One thing seems pretty certain, though: Hi-Fi Rush is not dead.

Mask of the Rose, Failbetter Games’ eldritch dating sim and my most-anticipated game of 2023, has been hit by another delay. Originally intended for an autumn release last year, it got punted to this April after the studio noticed how much stress its devs were under, and now it’s scooted back a little further to June 8 this year.

“Being a perspicacious kind of person, you’ll notice that the 8th of June is very much not in April,” said Failbetter in an announcement on Steam, and it’s apparently down to bugs in the game’s UI. Although Failbetter thought the game could work well enough with regular “visual novel interface conventions” at first, playtesting revealed that changes would need to be made to help players “navigate this vast web of choices.”

Those changes have already been made, but—being quite profound and sprawling—they’ve introduced a bunch of bugs that Failbetter has to spend some time ironing out. “The trouble is,” reads the announcement, “that in a game where the narrative is this flexible and procedural, these features open up a tremendous space for bugs.”

Companions are a defining feature of BioWare’s RPGs. The band of NPC followers who join your party in games like Baldur’s Gate and Dragon Age weren’t just a collection of yes-elves who quietly went along with every decision you made. They pushed back and disagreed, and would sometimes leave to go do their own thing. Each of those companions had a distinct personality and voice. And so, when a group of veteran RPG designers came together for a recent GDC roundtable hosted by PC Gamer, the question of how the writers managed their casts came up.
